Career and working life

VIEW MY CV (2022)

Following a career in the UK government I moved to Jersey 43 years ago.  I have been a top level manager in both the public and private sectors ; both the disciplines of the commercial world and workings of the public sector are second nature to me. The majority of my working life has been in the delivery of efficient public services and the development and implementation of public sector policy in the UK and all three Channel Islands.  Long term change and improvements benefiting society can only be achieved with strong political leadership , working in harmony with effective and committed civil servants. Having successfully worked on both sides of the political divide I really do know what good government looks like.

I was re elected to Jersey States in 2018 , serving as Environment Minister until June 2022 when I stood down. I had served as  Planning Officer for States of Alderney from 2015 to 2017 , producing their Land Use Plan and reforming planning law . I served as elected Deputy for St Brelade until late 2014 being elected as a Deputy in 2011  serving as Chairman of the Environment and TTS Scrutiny panel,  I was practice director of a local law firm from 2007 -2011, spent some time as a successful self-employed consultant, and two years from 2005-2007 as an accountant in the finance industry. Before that I worked for the States for 25 years in the States Treasury, as a Health Service senior manager, and 13 years as Chief Officer of the Planning and Environment department until 2004 .

I am a team person and have served with many local voluntary groups. Most recently assisting the Literary Festival Trust , as the Chairman of the Jersey Arts Centre, previously Treasurer for three years ; the Shelter Trust; Les Amis Management Committee; the Jersey steering group for the Eradication of Poverty and Treasurer of the Regent Tigers Swimming Club.
